Welcome to the AVERT Dashboard

This dashboard displays data and visualizations related to the syndromes tracked by the CDC AVERT program. The goal of this program is to increase the availability of rapid, reliable, and geographically- and population-specific surveillance data on ED visits for firearm injuries, other violence-related injuries, and mental health conditions.

Overall Volume for Firearm ED Visits for the period:
Captures initial emergency department visits in the state of Utah where the chief complaint or diagnosis includes mention of a firearm-related injury. Injuries are categorized according to intent: unintentional, intentional self-harm, and assault. Cases with unknown intent are also shown.

A firearm-related injury is a gunshot wound or penetrating injury from a weapon that uses a powder charge to fire a projectile and includes handguns, rifles, and shotguns. While these definitions are focused on identifying firearm injuries they may also include cases where those injuries resulted in death.

Death by firearm data are compiled using the Utah Death Certificate database. This data can be accessed through Utah’s Public Health Indicator Based Information System (IBIS).
